Being silly is definitely something that I’ve been accused of once or twice. I think a lot of my silliness came from when I was living at what I call “the leeming house” with Peth. I was living in this room with flower decorated wallpaper it was beautifully hideous. This photo of my light switch here probably sums up the silliness quite well.

Although I don’t know too much about the regal theatre I know it’s relatively old and quite famous in Perth.. well Subiaco to be correct. One thing I do know though is it took me a long time and careful planning to take a photo of this traffic light with all bulbs lit. I also remember I was alone that night and I ate an ice cream from an ice cream shop just down the road.

My ex-housemate Peth decided it would be a good idea to do some gardening. Turns out i’m not really that good at it. But I do like trying to take photos with leading lines into blurry backgrounds as the main subject. It’s quite hard to make it look good. I guess the affect I was going for was to emphasis the weird angle of this photo and possibly how I have little to no clue about gardening. And yes that is a shovel holding up a trailer.

It was the last moments of 2006 and the first moments of 2007 when these photos were taken. My parents wanted a bit of a break from Perth and wanted to travel to Albany. They asked me if I wanted to come along and well, I guess I was wanting a bit of a break too. Besides which I didn’t think I actually had any major plans for new years anyway. So, after quickly drinking my pint of beer I headed down to Albany’s foreshore with my tripod and started capturing photos. It took me awhile and some assistance from my dad to actually capture the fireworks. In the end I think the conditions were just right to capture some amazing shots. I’ve tried to take pictures of fireworks later and I didn’t quite succeed as well as I did here.

I remember this day, my job as an apprentice insturment technician/electrician would lead me to some weird places. On this very day I installed a couple pressure transmitters located on the bottom of the outer hull of HMAS Sirius. That was my introduction to confined spaces and gas detectors. I have to admit, although it was messy, dark, moist and crampt, I did enjoy the job. Another thing I remember is when I was actually taking the photo (it was on a timer) I had to not pull a stupid face. This was probably one of about ten or something as all the others were me pulling a retarded looking face. Mind you I can’t say with confidence that this face isn’t retarded looking too.

Every photographer comes to a point where their own equipment just isn’t good enough anymore. You have to buy more and more things, or at least borrow them. When I borrowed my mates 70-200mm f2.8 L series lens I wasn’t really sure what I was going to take photos of.. So I pointed it to a mirror and this is obviously what I saw.

My hair was getting rather long and annoying me, also I think this was around the time I was finding out that my hair was starting to thin out. So I wanted to be rid of it! And that I did, I took a photo to prove it.

This is one of my favourite photos. This was taken within the first couple months of getting my digital SLR. I remember just walking around aimlessly throughout the city taking photos. I would take photos of literally anything that moved (or didn’t move!)

I was trying to capture the texture on my hand here, but I found that with a few photoshop tweaks I could capture my veins too. I do remember struggling to find a black background for this photo. I think I ended up using a tshirt laying on top of a bean bag. I’ve never really been one for spending lots of money on fancy photography backdrops and all that.

Well, what’s there to say about Melissa? We had some great fun together and taking photos just made it all the merrier. Apart from being my most photographed person, she is also full of energy and possesses uniquely brilliant personality. Sadly though she has moved over to Sydney to pursue her dreams in journalism which puts a hinder on the possibility of more photo shoot sessions.
